BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'When You're Dying' by MQ Webb.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for MQ Webb, TBR Press and Zooloos Book Tours .
Publication date 22nd March 2023
This is the first book I have read by this author. It is also the second book in the Dr Oscar de la Nuit series but can be read as a standalone.
I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that ''M.Q. Webb’s latest psychological thriller When You’re Dying appeals to fans of Alex Michaelides, Gillian Flynn, and Riley Sager. Steeped in unreliable narrators, Webb plumbs dark secrets to build a twisty He Said, She Said that will leave you guessing to the end .' I am a MASSIVE fan of Gillian Flynn so am looking forward to seeing if it lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being TBR Press. I have yet to read a book published by TBR Press that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book.
This novel consists of 60 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is written in a mix of third and first person perspective and the protagonists are Verity Casmere and Dr Oscar de la Nuit. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything. To have the benefit of both first and third person perspective ensures you don't miss out on anything.
This book is well written with vivid descriptions that absolutely grip the readers attention and puts them right in the middle of it all making your heart pound and you constantly second guessing.
An intriguing read by MQ Webb!!! This may be the first book I have read by this fantastic author but it most certainly wil not be my last and I've already added all the rest of their books to my Amazon wish list. This book had me hook, line and sinker from the first page and I could not put it down!!! Every time I said one more chapter it ended on a cliffhanger and I just had to know what was going on!!! This kept on happening over and over until before I knew it I had devoured the whole book in one sitting!! If you are going to read this then clear your day because it is truly unputdownable. I started this this morning and finished it at approx 2pm, reading it in one sitting. Webb has created a multilayered psychological thriller that dives into the complexities of human behaviour and emotions and weaves it all together perfectly with a storyline filled with guilt, Crime, mystery, stress, turmoil, suspense!!! He takes us on a journey from present to past telling us Verity's past and what led him on the path he is on today. Webb's evocative writing ensures you are whisked away into the book feeling your heart pounding and the hair on your arms raise. This book is rammed with suspense and tension and will keep you biting your nails, on the edge of your seat with your heart pounding while your flipping the pages because you just cant stop. The storyline is intriguing and unique. It starts off straight into the action with Verity trying to escape. Verity is dying of cancer and her dying wish is to find out what happened to her missing sister. She is blinded by her tunnel vision and will do whatever it takes to get answers. Unfortunately this has landed her in trouble with her being put under investigation and potentially jeopardising the case. Forensic Psychiatrist Oscar de la Nuit is asked to investigate what is going on and discover who is telling the truth. Verity means truth but is she the one telling it? Has she been blind sighted all along? Is there more to Ashlee's disappearance than she realised? If you want to get the answer to these questions and more grab your copy today. This book is filled with the intriguing exploration of the human condition along with intricate emotions throughout. It is fast paced and ram packed with unexpected twists and turns. The only things I found slightly lacking was the end which I thought came a bit quickly and abrupt as if the author had had enough and wanted it to end. There were also several typos throughout the physical copy I had. However I still enjoyed this intriguing and page turner dark psychological thriller.
It is set over multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture
Although this is the second book in the series I had would have had absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.
This may be the first book I have read by this very talented author but it most certainly won't be the last and I cannot wait to get stuck into more of their previous and future books!!!
The authors evocative writing skills brings each of the characters to life and leaves you feeling that you are standing next to Rob as his story unfolds and his life starts to tumble around him. Each of the characters were realistic, well rounded and strong characters which makes it a realistic read. All the characters were strong and realistic as well as hiding their own secrets. I was completely invested in each and every one of them. I will admit that some of the things that Verity got up did have me shouting at the book on disbelief. There were times where I liked her and others where I found her to be quite annoying which was a shame. I connected more with Oscar who I am looking forward to meeting in Webb's first book in this series 'How To Spot A Psychopath' which I'm looking forward to reading. I really liked his character and felt for him at times. I don't want to risk saying more about how I felt about the characters as I don't want to give anything away to future readers but I will say that I was annoyed, angry, upset, disappointed at the different ones for many different reasons!! Regardless of whether you love them or hate them they each played their parts perfectly!!!
Overall an addictive and gripping emotional rollercoaster of secrets, family, crime, mystery, suspense, tension and everything you could want in a gripping thriller!!
