'Trecadno' by C P Davies

Updated: Nov 28, 2022

Book Description

A fresh start. The smog of the city in the rear view, and in front the green green grass of Wales…

That’s the idea anyway. But by the time John steps off the bus in his new home, the curtains are already twitching. The sleepy village of Trecadno doesn’t get much fresh blood, let alone that most exotic of specimens… a Londoner.

Soon he finds himself on call to the whole community: there are classes to be taught, campaigns to be run, even coffins to be carried.

Still, it’s not all bad. There’s the attention of Trecadno’s female population for one: a beautiful pharmacist, a flirty teacher… He could get used to this.

However, as John gets to grips with the quirks of his new home, he can’t slip the suspicion that something isn’t quite right. Someone, or something, is watching him from afar – and it’s not just his landlady…

At once suspenseful and side-splitting, Trecadno rests on a minutely observed portrait of rural Welsh life, a portrayal as affectionate as it is playful.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Trecadno' by CP Davies.

Read and reviewed for CP Davies and Candy Jar Books.

Publication date 30th March 2023

This is C.P Davies debut novel.

I was originally drawn to this book by its stunning eye catching cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. The author is also local to me and I love to support local authors. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Candy Jar Books. I have yet to read a book published by Candy Jar Books that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of 17 chapters. The chapters are medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in a fictional village called Trecadno, Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture. This book is actually based around my local villages so I'm definitely intrigued to see if I recognise anywhere mentioned!!

This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonist is John. The benefits of third person perspective are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

Love, love, LOVED this gorgeous unique storyline!!! I am ABSOLUTELY shocked that this is the authors first book as she writes like someone with many best sellers and had me hook, line and sinker!!

The descriptions are extremely vivid which completely set the scene for me and really made me feel like I was in the storyline. The beautiful cover, title and synopsis suit the plot perfectly.

The storyline is most definitely unique and like one I have never read before which was a HUGE bonus as there is so many times you can read very similar books before you get fed up. I was absolutely sucked in from the first page to the last and I absolutely loved guessing where the locations were based on. I absolutely love the fact that Christine is a local author and the book was based in my surrounding areas as it made the book all the more realistic for me. It is a great storyline based on John who moves to Trecadno, gets a job teaching, stays with a landlady who refuses to give him a key and surrounded by some very strange members of the community. It had me laughing out loud on so many occasions so be careful where you read it!!! I had a few strange looks when I just burst out laughing at some of the scenes in the book. Christine has captured the small village community "essence" perfectly with the twitching curtains, being unable to have any secrets and everyone knowing your business!!! This is another thing that made the storyline so realistic. There is also some mysterious things happening in Trecadno that will keep you guessing and wondering throughout and there's a fantastic twist that I would have never seen coming so a HUGE WELL DONE TO Christine!! I absi love twists and surprised in books and you definitely managed to shock me. I was completely devastated to leave Trecadno at the end of the book and I really hope Christine considers making a sequel and soon as I'm beginning to miss the place and some characters already and I've only just closed the last page!!!

An absolutely unputdownable page turner that will suck you in from the first until the last pages!!

If wasn't just the storyline that I was invested in but the characters too! There was such a large mix of personalities and I enjoyed getting to know them all and seeing how they all interacted with each other. John is the main character in the book and I really enjoyed following his story. I felt sorry on him at times as it seemed he couldn't do anything right for a long time. Poor John was always in the wrong place at the wrong time and was constantly being accused of being an alcoholic which did have me in giggles. John's landlady was another huge character and she had me in absolute stitches the way she went on about how much hard work it was doing certain things, how John had to have his meals at certain times and how he shouldn't be expected to have a key seeing as she was a lady in her own in the house. Mrs Hughes was on his back the moment he got off the bus until the end and made him seem like an incapable child, although sometimes John did act like one!! Elisabeth-Mail is the mysterious pharmacist John becomes obsessed with and who resembles the foxed of Trecadno. Doc Jones spends more time in the pub that at the doctors surgery. Betty Wontsmey has her eyes set on every man who walks into Tracadno with John being her latest quest. These are just some of the unforgettable characters you will meet on this great Welsh journey and I am hoping to meet them all again!!!
