Her rival

Is her most dangerous temptation!

Astrid Viggosdottir’s father has ordered a competition between her and new arrival Viking Ulrik to

prove who is the better boat-builder! If she loses, Princess Astrid will be duty-bound to marry a Jarl.

If Ulrik loses, he will be banished, leaving his motherless daughter homeless. With the stakes so high,

Astrid should hate this man―but during the long hot summer their rivalry turns to a heated passion

that neither can ignore!

Guest Post

Vikings were well-known for dominating the dark ages as fierce warriors...which they were.

However, one of their greatest strengths was down to their ships. Exceptional shipbuilders, Norse

boats were built so well, that they were able to navigate both high seas and low waterways with

equal skill. This meant they could launch surprise attacks on their enemies, and leave with all their

treasure before a defensive army could be summoned.

The Norse were basically sailing Tesla's while the rest of the world were still struggling with their

2005 Ford Focus (guess what car I drive...hint it has a CD player).

I wanted to pay homage to this excellent craftsmanship by focusing on two competing ship

builders in my enemies to lovers romance, ‘The Viking She loves to Hate’.

Below is an extract for them opening chapter of the book!

‘Astrid, you will never get a husband if you keep dressing and behaving like a man.’

‘What a pity,’ Astrid replied cheerfully as she heaped her platter with bread, pickles and roasted meats.

‘Both of your sisters are married, and have been content for some time now,’ Viggo grumbled, and Astrid

knew immediately where this miserable conversation was headed. ‘Surely you do not wish to spend your

life alone?’

No, but I would rather that than a single day of your marriage, thought Astrid, although she dared not

say it.

Their constant bickering was a lesson she had taken to heart.

‘She is our youngest daughter—let her enjoy her freedom for a little longer.’ Inga smiled indulgently,

delicately placing a spoonful of braised apple and cabbage on Astrid’s platter, her favourite side-dish. ‘There

is plenty of time to find the perfect match for her.’

‘She has seen over five and twenty winters, Inga! She needs to marry, and soon. Even as my daughter it

will be a struggle to find a man willing to take on such an old bride.’

‘Old!’ Inga’s eyes turned to ice. ‘If my daughter is old, then what am I?’

‘A beloved wife and mother.’ Viggo glared at her. ‘And do not turn this into an argument as you usually

do.’

‘Why should I marry?’ interrupted Astrid. ‘You have two daughters who have made good alliances for

you already, as well as an heir to your throne.’ ‘You need to start a family of your own. For too long you have run around, idly doing whatever you

please! You need protection and a purpose in life.’

‘I have both! I am your master boat-builder and I am under your protection.’

‘I am sure we could find you a husband that allowed you to continue your carving… That is what you

truly enjoy is it not, being an artisan?’

Astrid scowled. ‘I enjoy both aspects.’

Years ago she had argued that boat-building was an artisan’s craft when her father had objected to her

learning it from their aging boat-builder. Now he was using that argument against her. Her father wasn’t just

a king because he was well-loved, there was intelligence and ruthlessness behind those cheerful smiles.

‘Well, my good friend Ulrik is here now, and I owe him a great debt.’

Astrid frowned. ‘A debt?’

Duty and friendship would be used against her!

‘He saved my life once many years ago, took an axe in the thigh meant for me. It is fortunate we meet

again after all these years. I can finally repay him.’

‘And so you now give a stranger my position!’ Her voice rose with indignation. ‘How do you even know

if he can build a ship? He only repaired the one that I made!’

‘I can build you a ship, faster than any other,’ came the booming voice of Ulrik. She had not realised he

had been following their conversation from afar. The hall quietened and she cursed the man for interfering

in what was obviously a family matter.

‘See!’ Viggo cheered, and raised his horn to toast Ulrik. ‘And that is what I truly need. A fast ship, with

plenty of cargo room. As beautiful as your carvings are—’

‘My ships are both beautiful and functional!’ Astrid shouted in outrage, although she felt like that little

girl caught causing mischief beneath the tables.

Inga nodded, placing a calming hand on her arm. ‘Viggo, you said yourself that Dragon’s Breath is your

pride and joy. You even said to bury you in it when your time came.’

‘It is a beauty,’ Viggo conceded, ‘but perhaps Ulrik could build me something better in the future?’

‘In the future? Your time in this world might be shorter than you think, my love,’ hissed Inga under her

breath.

Viggo gave a gruff snort of amusement and then spoke loudly for all to hear. ‘Perhaps a competition,

then? To see who can build the best ship.’

Astrid felt dread pool in her stomach. Surely her father wasn’t going to do this?
