Review for 'The Tail Of Mum, Dad And A Dog Called Rupert' by Helen Morrish
Read and reviewed for Helen Morrish, Silverwood Books and Random Things Tours.
Publication date 20th April 2022.
This is Helen Morrish's Debut book
I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching and cute cover along with its sweet sounding storyline. I also decided to get it for my 9 year old to read as he is a huge animal lover and in his words he thinks it looks "cool and adventurous".
This book is 66 pages long and can be read in less than an hour (I read it in about 15 minutes).
This book is written in first person perspective from Rupert the dog so you get to see exactly how he feels about certain events.
'The Tail Of Mum, Dad And A Dog Called Rupert' discusses some topics that may upset some younger reasons or bring up potentially upsetting or awkward questions.
This book is an absolutely beautifully illustrated tale of a Staffordshire Terrier called Rupert who has been rescued from an animal shelter by a couple he calls Mum and Dad. The book tells his story of his life with his new mum and dad describing his new home.
The character illustrations really help to bring Rupert's story to life and some of them had me laughing out loud while other's brought a tear to my eye. I love the fact that we see everything from his point of view and it really helps readers to consider the perspective of their rescue pets when they do certain things which hopefully makes them understand them better and hopefully have a bit more patience with them. I like the fact that because of this, even though it is aimed at children, it is still quite a thought provoking book. Well it was to me at least!
The storyline had several funny moments as well as a few sad ones but please don't let this put you off. What I love about this book is that to me it isn't just a story but one that is quite informative. I don't want to give too much away but there are a few great facts and some guidance such as to put suncream on certain dog breeds or colour dogs, naming some dog breeds and encouraging readers to recycle/upcycle. It is also a truly endearing story of love and loss that is told to readers by none other than the humorous Rupert the Staffordshire Terrier.
The fact that this book is based on the author's true life was both lovely and sad but the fact that she went through a certain event and rather than hide herself away she used it to something positive and bring a beautiful book into this world is definitely inspirational and I am really looking forward to getting my paws on the second book.
Direct quote from Malaki Whitlock(9), my son : I think the book was funny because the dog looked like a pig when he was in the sun. It was kind of sad when #### (won't write what he said as don't want to spoil it for future readers) and when he said that someone had hit him 😭 . I thought it was cool that the story was told by a dog. I thought the pictures were really good. I thought the doll pictures were a bit creepy but it was funny how the mum collected things. I would give this book 4.5 🌟 out of 5 just because the sad bits and the dolls.
Overall an absolutely beautifully written and informative tail of love and loss filled with gorgeous illustrations.
I would recommend this book to children and adults alike but I would recommend a parent reads it before giving it to their child so they are aware of the storyline.
66 pages.

About the Author
After the sudden death of her husband, realizing with a jolt that life really was too short, Helen left her job as an art director on a women’s magazine to pursue a long-held dream of becoming an artist. To help her through her grief, she spent five minutes every day drawing their beloved dog, Rupert, and these are the illustrations that have evolved into her debut book. Helen is an active member of her community and, in 2020, was asked to present its hugely popular arts-and-music festival, interviewing authors, artists and performers about their work. In 2021, she was commissioned to illustrate the town’s map for tourists. When she’s not working on her next book, Helen runs her own creative company Lady Crimplene and indulges her passion for all things retro, which includes her collection of Sindy dolls, which she art directs photo shoots with. A homebird by nature, she loves nothing more than to watch a good horror film, write comedy and dance to 80s music. To find out more about Helen and her books, visit helenmorrish.co.uk
