BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'The Nurse's Secret' by Liz Lawler.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 31st October 2022.
This is the second book that I have read by this author. I have also read 'The Next Wife' which I would also highly recommend.
I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching cover and intriguing synopsis. I am also a huge fan of Liz Lawler and if this book is half as good as 'The Next Wife' it is guaranteed to be a page turner. The synopsis stated that this book is 'An addictive psychological thriller that will have you glued to the pages until the final shocking twist. Perfect for fans of K.L. Slater, Shari Lapena and Clare Mackintosh.' I am a massive fan of K.L Slater and Shari Lapena so am looking forward to see if it lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue and 66 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Bath, England , UK 🇬🇧 . I always enjoy when books are set in the UK as I'm from Wales and have sometimes visited areas mentioned in the book. This makes it easier to picture the scenes. I have, in fact, visited Bath so am hoping to be able to set the scenes smoother in my head.
This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonists are Sarah Shaw, Nick and Charlie. The benefits of books written in third person with several protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
This book is extremely well written and the fantastic descriptions definitely add to the dark atmosphere. The synopsis and the cover worked very well with the plot. I am most definitely looking forward to reading more books by this very talented author.
The storyline is extremely compelling and addictive as well as very dark. It was a slow burner but starts picking up later on in the book. It is character driven and has a fantastic mix of medical and police procedurals. It is filled with secrets, tension and a fantastic twist that the book builds up to. The fact that Liz has done her research so a huge WELL DONE to Liz as its a huge disappointment when authors don't do any or enough research into their subject and the book is then littered with unnecessary mistakes. I enjoyed that we get to see the perspectives from three characters with two being detectives and one a nurse. It is an intriguing and compelling read that will keep you guessing throughout.
This is only the third book that I have listened 100% on Audiobook. If I listen to a book on audiobook I usually also read the physical book between but for the third time I listened to the whole book and I was impressed! I must say a HUGE congratulations to the narrator Sarah Durham who did a great job bringing this story to life. I would listen to it in the car and while walking at any opportunity and Amalia did a fantastic job on both male and female characters voices!!! I'm not only looking forward to reading more books by Liz but also to listening to more books narrated by Sarah!
The characters all played their roles very well. Each of the characters seem to have their own hidden secrets that I was intrigued to discover. I was never sure who I should or shouldn't trust throughout. I had mixed feelings on the characters but whether I liked them or not they all work perfectly together to make this such a page turning read.
Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read an excerpt of Liz's absolutely gripping 'The Next Wife' which is another addictive page turner and one I have read myself and would highly recommend!!
Overall an intriguing and page turning medical and police thriller.
Genres covered in this novel include Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Psychological Fiction, Drama, Medical Thriller, Police Procedural, Women's Crime Fiction and Psychological Thriller amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of K.L. Slater, Shari Lapena and Clare Mackintosh.
368 pages/11 hours 7 minutes.
This book is £1.99 to purchase on kindle, free on kindle unlimited, £20.03 on audiobook and £9.99 in paperback at time of review via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!
