'The Daughters' by Julia Crouch

Updated: May 29, 2022

Book Description:

My father said my mother killed herself. My sister says he’s lying. The day of our mother’s funeral, my little sister Lucy and I clung to our father’s side. He promised he’d get us through it, and we believed him. But then I discovered that the coffin we wept over was empty. Dad says he was trying to protect us – that he thought it would be easier to grieve if we didn’t know our mother’s body was never found. His new wife says she just wants to help us move on from the past. Then Lucy has a flash of memory that leaves her shaking. Our father. A woman she doesn’t recognise. A knife… She insists she knows something about the day our mother died, but it’s buried too deep to see clearly. What happened to our mother? I need to find the truth. But I have no idea who I can trust. And what if the answer puts my life in danger? A completely gripping psychological thriller that will make your heart pound as you try to decide who is telling the truth. Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Paula Hawkins and Gillian Flynn.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'The Daughters' by Julia Crouch.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Julia Crouch, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 26th May 2022.

This is the second book I have read by this author. I have also read 'The New Mother' which I would also recommend!

I was originally drawn to this book by its stunning eye catching cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. I am also a fan of Julia and if this is half as good as 'The New Mother' it is guaranteed to be a page turner!! The synopsis stated that this book is 'Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Paula Hawkins and Gillian Flynn.' I am a huge fan of Lisa Jewell so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of 47 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in London, England, 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 , UK 🇬🇧. I always enjoy when books are set in the UK as I'm from Wales and have sometimes visited areas mentioned in the book.

This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonists are Sara and Carys. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

'The Daughters' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Julia discusses/includes mental health, attempted suicide and the death of a child.

OMG!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!! WHAT A BOOK!!! JUST WOW, WOW, WOW!!! MIND BLOWN!!! Congratulations Julia on yet another huge success!!

What an absolutely fantastically written book with vivid descriptions that make your heart raise and keeps you on the edge of your seat!!! The cover, synopsis and title suit the book perfectly!!

This book has a very realistic storyline and one which I was completely invested in. Once I picked it up I could not put it down so if you are about to read this then make sure you clear your schedules. If your not going to read it then a) why the heck not?!?! And b) definitely your loss!!! . It is absolutely filled with fanily, deception, love, tension, lies, suspense and a few shocks and twists thrown in!!! It was a complete minefield of twists and turns and I jist had no idea who to believe. I was definitely not expecting the twists or the ending so a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Julia. I have read thousands of thrillers so it is getting harder and harder to shock me but you managed to completely blow my mind! The fact that Julia has done her research shines through. There is not much worse than a book filled with errors that have could easily have been avoided through research. I was completely intrigued by the hypnotherapy aspects as I've always wondered if it does work and if I would be willing to put complete trust in someone to delve that deep into my mind and even possibly place false memories. Being a vegan myself I enjoyed that veganism was mentioned throughout this book. This is the second book in which Julia mentions veganism so I'm wondering if she may be vegan herself. A genuine page turner that will keep you flipping the pages until you reach the explosive ending!!!

I was completely invested in both Carys and Sara who are both very realistic and strong women both with very different personalities. It was intriguing to watch how both their personalities and their relationship changed throughout the story. I wasn't sure what to think of Carys at first and struggled to trust her but she redeemed herself as I was reading more about her. My heart went out to Lucy who was struggling with her mental health while being bombarded with so many different scenarios. I also felt sorry for little Bonnie who was completely innocent in everything but suffered herself. I wanted to say something about the other characters but I don't want to give anything away so I think I will have to leave it at that. Nonna and Fig are both adorable additions and I can see how the breed can be easily confused with Labradoodles so I enjoyed doing my own but of research on Lagotto's and Labradoodles which was quite fun. Regardless of whether you love or hate the characters they all work perfectly well to make an unputdownable and explosive psychological thriller.

Congratulations Julia on one heck of a page turning psychological read!!! I absolutely loved reading this book and have already added all your previous books to my wish list. I look forward to reading more of your previous and future books. I would absolutely LOVE to see this turned into a movie which I can guarantee will be a sell out!! This is why you are in my favourite authour club!!! Here's to your next success 🥂

Author Bio:

Julia started off as a theatre director and playwright. While her children were growing up, she swerved into graphic design. After writing and illustrating two children’s books for an MA, she discovered that her great love was writing prose. The picture books were deemed too dark for publication, so, to save the children, she turned instead to writing for adults. Her first book, Cuckoo, was published in 2011, and she has been writing what she calls her Domestic Noir novels ever since. She also writes for TV and teaches on the Crime Writing MA at the University of East Anglia. She has three grown up children and lives in Brighton with her husband and two cats, Keith and Sandra. http://juliacrouch.co.uk/ https://www.facebook.com/JuliaCrouchAuthor/ https://www.instagram.com/juliageek/ https://twitter.com/thatjuliacrouch
