The Attic At Wilton Place' by C.E Rose. Review

Book Description

The perfect life. The perfect home. But at what price?

Introspective Ruth Parker is desperate for love and attention. Overlooked as a child by her cold and critical mother, her pain manifests in loneliness and a crippling lack of self-esteem. When glamorous actress ‘Aunt’ Vanessa, her mother’s childhood friend, shows an interest in her, Ruth basks in the blinding light of her attention.

Once Ruth escapes to university in London, Aunt Vanessa invites her to Wilton Place, her stunning Belgravia residence. As she blossoms under Vanessa’s guidance, Ruth finds herself torn between student life and the hypnotic, luxurious confines of Wilton Place. Belgravia wins out, but when Ruth explores the gloomy attic of her new home and finds a hidden, locked door, she discovers that Vanessa is hiding the darkest of secrets from her childhood, secrets that threaten everything Ruth knew about her own mother.

How far will Ruth go to find the truth - and how much does she really want to know?

A twisty, Gothic-inspired chiller that fans of Kate Morton, Louise Douglas and Kathleen McGurl will love.

Blog Tour Review

BLOG TOUR REVIEW Review for 'The Attic At Wilton Place' by CE Rose. Read and reviewed for CE Rose and Hera Books. Publication date 30th March 2023. This is the second book I have read by this author. It have also read 'The Shadows Of Rutherford House' which I would also highly recommend! I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is "A twisty, Gothic-inspired chiller that fans of Kate Morton, Louise Douglas and Kathleen McGurl will love." I am a huge fan of Kate Morton so am looking forward to see if it lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of C.E Rose and if this book is half as good as 'The Shadows Of Rutherford House' it is guaranteed to be a page turner! I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Hera Books. I have yet to read a book published by Hera Books that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book). This novel consists 89 chapters set over 5 parts. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case! This book is based in Belgravia, London, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 , UK 🇬🇧 . I always enjoy when books are partly or fully set in the UK as I'm from Wales and have sometimes visited areas mentioned in the book. This makes it easier to picture where the scenes are set at times. I have in fact visited and gone on holiday in London and England on many occasions so am looking forward to possibly recognising name places.

This book is written in first person perspective and the main protagonist is Ruth Parker. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on.

WOW!! What an absolutely, addictive page turning book with everything you could ask for!! What an absolutely addictive page turner!! This is exactly why you are one of my favourite authors Caroline!! You manage to get me hook, line and sinker each time! I was completely sucked into the pages from start to finish and was gutted when it came to an end! It is a very clever and extremely intriguing story of the coming of age of the characters going from home to student to luxury life reminding the reader of how they would have felt at each of these stages in their lives ensuring the characters are relatable to the reader and making them more realistic and developed. The storyline is multi-layered and absolutely ram packed with mystery, deceit, romance, secrets, lies, tension and suspense. I loved the fact that there wasn't just the main storyline but plenty of other events going on to absolutely grip the readers attention along with the creepy gothic atmosphere which is always a bonus for me!! The creepier, the better I say! I really enjoyed trying to guess what was going on but yet again I failed when it comes tio this fantastic author and I loved all the twists and turns that were going on especially the unexpected ending!! It is getting harder and harder to shock me but you completely blew my mind with this ending. The atmosphere was perfect with a gothic chill to it that really set the story and made it come alive. The storyline is ram packed with suspense, mystery, tension, friendship, secrets and everything you could ask for and more in a great psychological thriller!! It is definitely one of those immersive storylines that you cannot just stick to the one more chapter that you promised yourself and I was absolutely hooked from beginning to end, unable to put it down until I discovered what the truth was. I ended up devouring it in one sitting and thanks to Caroline's evocative writing skills the storyline and the characters came to life around me and several times when I looked up I had completely forgotten where I was and THAT ladies and gentleman is what happens when you come across an extremely talented author and an addictive read!!! I cannot wait to read more books by this very talented author!! DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT READING THIS UNTIL YOU HAVE CLEARED YOUR SCHEDULES AS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PUT IT DOWN!!! I wasn't just 100% invested in the storyline but also in the characters. Every single one of the characters were complex, well defined, realistic and strong. The character development was strong throughout and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each and every single one of them. My heart absolutely broke for Ruth who had a rubbish childhood growing up with a horrid mother who constantly belittled her while showering Ruth's brother with the love and kindness that Ruth craved. I can never ever understand so called parents who do this to their children and it absolutely breaks my heart to see it in reality and in books. All Ruth wanted was for her mother's love so when her Aunt Vanessa comes along and gives her just that there is no wonder she jumps at the chance of moving in with her!!! Ruth is a fantastic character who is relatable, lovable and one of those characters that you root for from the second you meet them. It was absolutely fascinating discovering all the secrets of this gothic house with a secret like no other and I would love to go back to visit in another of this amazing authors books!! Hint, hint Caroline 😉. As with all books, movies and in real life we can't get on with everyone and there was a particular character that I could not stand but I will not reveal anymore. You will just have to pick up a copy of discover the secrets and shadows of Wilton's place yourself. A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to CE Rose on yet another absolutely addictive page turner!! I would love to see this turned into a movie and I will be the first in the line to by tickets. This is exactly why you are one of my favourite author list Caroline and here's to your next explosive success 🥂!!! Overall an explosive, addictive action packed page turner that is filled with secrets and explosive twists and will keep you hooked until you've finished!!!

Genres covered in this novel include Gothic Romance, Mystery, Suspense, Tension, Crime Thriller, Gothic Fiction, Domestic Drama, Romance Fiction, Crime Fiction, Psychological Thriller, Fiction Mashups, Coming Of Age Fiction, Literary Fiction, Domestic Fiction, Psychological Fiction and Suspense Thriller amongst others.

Author Bio

CE Rose is the pen name of Caroline England, the CWA Dagger shortlisted author of psychological thrillers Beneath the Skin, My Husband’s Lies, Betray Her, Truth Games and The Sinner.

As CE Rose, Caroline has written gothic-tinged domestic suspense novels, The House of Hidden Secrets and The House on the Water’s Edge. The Shadows of Rutherford House will be released on 10th November 2022.

Caroline likes to write multi-layered, dark and edgy ‘domestic suspense’ stories that delve into complicated relationships, secrets, lies, loves and the moral grey area. Drawing on her days as a divorce and professional indemnity lawyer, she loves to create ordinary, relatable characters who get caught up in extraordinary situations, pressures, dilemmas or crime. She admits to a slight obsession with the human psyche, what goes on behind closed doors and beneath people’s façades. She also enjoys performing a literary sleight of hand and hopefully surprising her readers.
