Poetry As It Was Once by Peter Cressall. Review

Book Description

Poetry As It Was Once by Peter Cressall is a must read for poetry lovers.

Here is a book which sets the record straight on what poetry is. Descriptive, of course, but also with the discipline of rhythm and rhyme, which demands the elimination of the superfluous and the repetitive. This is not to disparage prose. On the contrary, prose can indeed be beautiful: but it is not poetry.

There are poets whose works are of course brilliant but lacking in humour. But life would not be life without fun, so they describe a somewhat one-sided view of the human condition. Indeed, we all suffer from time to time, but we also experience joy and laughter. I at least hope that I may expire with a smile.

An absolute must-read for poetry lovers. Poetry As It Once Was Once is a lovely read. Full of nostalgia, and feelings, reading it takes you on emotional rollercoaster that leaves you feeling wholly satisfied.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Poetry As It Was Once' by Peter Cressall.

Read and reviewed a physical copy for Peter Cressall, Brown Dog Books, Netgalley and Literally PR.

Publication date 20th April 2023.

This is the first book I have read by this author.

This novel consists of 29 poems. The poems are short in length so easy to read 'just one more poem' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

A fantastic collection of 29 poems filled with emotions. Each of these poems tells the reader of life and growing old. They all written in the form of sonnets and limericks to create rhythm and flow. An excellent selection of poems which are emotionally charged and each filled with life, aging and emotions. As is the case of all books filled with short stories or poems it is very rare to like them all as they are all so different from each other and will attract different audiences. In my case my favourite poems just have to be 'Cheerful, or Tearful?', 'Bible Stories' and 'Happy Birthday XI' for different reasons whereas I just didn't 'click' with 'Sonnet C'. That doesn't mean there was anything wrong with that poem and for others that may be their favourite while they dislike 'Bible Stories'. One of the other poems that really stuck out for me was definitely 'Sonnet Cll' which takes the reader from the age of 18 to 80 in a minute and the descriptions were extremely evocative it really felt like I loved a lifetime in that minute.

That is one of the great things about poems, there is always something from everyone. All of these stories are about life, growing old and everything in between which makes the majority of the poems quite relatable! I read. this book in a couple of hours and it can easily be read just as quickly or you can just read a poem a day, another great thing about poem books is that it can last as long or as short as you wish it to. Peter has excellent writing skills and I look forward to reading more of his work! I received a physical copy of this book and I must say the pages are thick and of extremely good quality. The cover is shiny and the book is a nice size making it easy to hold and carry in your bag to read while out and about. In this book Peter questions why poetry has become so unpopular and goes on to describe how people react to the mention of poetry. I must admit I wasn't previously a huge fan of poetry but being an eclectic reader I decided to give this book of poems a try. I am very pleased I did as I really enjoyed it and if more people pick this book up then I really can see Peter bringing poetry back into popularity. I also wanted to say that I absolutely loved his authors note which made me laugh!!

Grab your copy of 'Poetry As It Was Once' and discover which poems you love!!!

Overall a beautiful selection of emotionally packed poems about life, aging and much more!!
