Hate At First Sight by Lizzie O'Hagan. Review

Book Description

THEY SAY IT'S A THIN LINE BETWEEN LOVE AND ....

HATE AT FIRST SIGHT

Kate hates feeling out of control. Her incessant need to overprepare has always served her well. Yet nothing could have prepared her for today.

Not only is she being evicted from her flat . . . by her best friend, but now her boss has announced cost-cutting measures that will put her job in jeopardy. She may not love the company she works for, but she's worked too hard for too long to just give up. So she's ready to prove herself.

The catch? If she wants to save her job, she'll have to work with creative, happy-go-lucky Harry. The one man she's spent the last five years trying to forget.

But what happens when that line you've drawn starts to blur?

This witty, dizzying, snort-with-laughter enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy is an instantly unputdownable and unmissable treat that will have you falling head over heels in love with its characters. Perfect for fans of Sally Thorne, Emily Henry, Talia Hibbert, Mhairi McFarlane and Beth O'Leary.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Hate At First Sight' by Lizzie O'Hagan.

Read and reviewed for Headline, Headline Review, Lizzie O'Hagan and Netgalley.

Publication date 25th May 2023.

This is the first book I have read by this author.

This book is set in London, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, UK . The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture. I absolutely love that this book is set in Wales which I must admit was another thing that drew me to it and I cannot wait to see if I recognize any places mentioned.

I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated 'This witty, dizzying, snort-with-laughter enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy is an instantly unputdownable and unmissable treat that will have you falling head over heels in love with its characters. Perfect for fans of Sally Thorne, Emily Henry, Talia Hibbert, Mhairi McFarlane and Beth O'Leary.’ I am a HUGE fan of Emily Henry and Beth O'Leary so am looking forward to seeing if it lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Headline Review. I have yet to read a book published by Headline that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of an epilogue, 30 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is written in first person perspective and the main protagonist is Kate Carter. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them.

This book has fantastic descriptions that set you straight in the scenes. The cover, title and synopsis suit the storyline perfectly.

This book is very well written with vivid descriptions setting the picture perfectly in the readers mind. The title, description and cover works perfectly with the storyline. It is one of those books that are very easy to read and perfect for any reading situations whether you are laying on a beach or curled up in front of a fire. It is an absolutely ideal read for anyone who is looking for a fantastic read that will have you hooked from beginning to end. I absolutely LOVED the realism of this storyline which made it so easy to picture everything that was going on which had been helped by Lizzie's fantastic evocative writing skills. I cannot wait to get hooked into more of Lizzie's books so I hope she is busy writing her next one!!

This is definitely one of those books that will turn a frown upside down and make life seem a lot brighter. It is packed with fun, romance, heartbreak, friendship, laughter, jealousy and everything you could ask for in a fantastic feel good book. Kate loves her job in the basement of 'Poster' where she works as a data analyst with a small group of her friends hidden away from the 'perfect' faces of Poster on the tenth floor. Kate is almost thirty years old, likes to be organised and in control and after an embarrassing incident that happened on the tenth floor five years ago she never wants to return there!!! However, life doesn't always go the way we want and before she knows it not only has she been evicted from her flat by her best friend but Poster is also starting to cut costs. This means that Kate ends up moving with a stranger called Wolf and his dog Boner and also moves up to the tenth floor and has to work with the guy involved in the embarrassing incident which is one of the reasons she avoided the tenth floor. Can Kate work with the guy who seems to hate her so much to mortify her in front of a room full of people? Will she quit her job and find somewhere else to live where she isn't jumping on the sofa to avoid Boner? You'll just have to grab your copy today to find out!!! A laugh out loud book filled with fantastic characters, sparks flying, arguments and so much more!!! Lizzie's evocative writing skills drew me deep into the book bringing the atmosphere and characters to life all around me. It is one of those books that I could not put down. I ended up walking around the house looking at my kindle reading away and absolutely devoured it in one sitting. I also want to congratulate Lizzie on her fantastic ability to weave important subjects such as perceptions from others, social media pressure and advertising, self-worth, and speaking up for what you believe into such a fantastic storyline.

The characters were all an eclectic mix and each one of them were realistic and strong. I absolutely loved Kate's say it as it is attitude which reminded me of myself on a few occasions!! There were several times I ended up laughing out loud with some of the things she came out with!! When she ends up working with Harry and Cally it's her worse nightmare. Harry embarrassed her 5 years ago and Cally is a beautiful Poster face (the people Kate spends all her working hours avoiding)!! I really enjoyed the character development and seeing the relationships changing between the characters. I absolutely adored Wolf and especially his dog Boner, yeo seriously 😂!!! I also really enjoyed meeting the "basement" gang who are my type of people but also watching some of the faces of Poster proving Kate wrong, especially Barbie, again yep seriously 😂!! There was a huge mix of characters and regardless of how you feel about the characters they all worked perfectly in this great storyline!!!

This may be the first book I have read by Lizzie but it most certainly won't be my last and I cannot wait to get stuck in to more books by this amazing author!!

Overall a fantastic book filled with romance, fun, drama, self-worth, friendship and so much more!!

Genres covered in this book include Women's Romance Fiction, Relationships, Women's New Adult & College Fiction, Women's Contemporary Fiction, Romance Fiction, General Humour, Contemporary Fiction, Women Writers And Fiction, Romantic Relationships, New Adult Romance, Romantic Comedy and Contemporary Romance amongst others.
