Jax led the way behind the first brick building, dodging windows and hurrying
past back doors as they went. They stopped when they reached the end. Jax told
Laura and Tim to stay behind the tall bush while he peeked around the corner. A
light was shining through the window on the side of the second building. If he
remembered, that was Captain Ryan’s den.
“Okay, so far, so good. I can’t see the captain from here, but I think he’s in his
den. Let me check it out...by myself. If he is, I’m going to jimmy the back door open
and pray his wife isn’t in the kitchen.”
“Jax, why don’t I just go to the front door and ask if I can speak with him?” Laura
asked. “I came along so we could avoid breaking into his home.”
“If you remember, I didn’t ask you to come along,” Jax argued.
“I don’t understand why you’re being so stubborn. The way I see it...”
Ace started growling.
“Quiet, Ace,” Jax scolded. “We don’t need your two cents.”
But Ace snarled as he crept forward with his ears perked, his fangs showing, and
his tail nearly straight up and stiff.
Jax peeked around the bush again and scowled. He saw the silhouette of
someone slinking up the back stairs to the captain’s apartment. “Ace, get back,” he
whispered. “I don’t believe this.”
Both Tim and Laura leaned forward to see.
“Cripes, who is that?” Tim asked.
“How should I know? Maybe just a friendly visitor?”
Laura grabbed his arm. “Jax, it’s not a visitor. He has some sort of head
covering on, and he’s dressed in dark clothes. You have to stop him.”
Jax sighed. “What are the odds someone would beat us to our own break-in?”
