Ebony The Cat by Frances Ive. Review.

Book Description

Enigmatic, quirky, moody, demanding, loving, amusing, domineering and determined all apply to

Ebony. Follow her life story from a stray kitten to a mature feline, in her own words.

Ebony was just eight months old when she was left to fend for herself on the streets, abandoned and

alone. The black cat had to learn how to hunt, find shelter, procure food and protect herself from

predators. The experience shaped her personality forever. She became a wily, capable little cat

before she was reported to a rescue charity and taken to live in a large wooden hut. She was safe and

well fed, but she longed for the freedom to be roaming around in nature, practising the skills she had

learnt.

Would she find a home and owners who loved her, not abandon her once again? Could she settle

down and be a good domestic cat? This was the quandary for the people who took her and within

months she presented them with a bundle of surprises. A novella. Based on a true story.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Ebony The Cat' by Frances Ive.

Read and reviewed for Frances Ive, Five Press and Rachel's Random Resources Tours.

Publication date 28th May 2023.

This is the first book I have read by this author.

This book consists of an Introduction, 10 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is such a charming book for children and adult's alike. I am 36 years old and I have 5 year old twin boys and a 10 year old son and we all loved reading/listening to Ebony's adventures. The chapters are lovely and short and each chapter can be read as a story/adventure on its own. It was lovely to watch Ebony grow through the years and meet her family along with the other characters. I absolutely loved all the facts dotted around the book as did my 10 year old son and we both learned several new things about cats!!! The fact that I learnt and never knew before was that 'A cat's cerebral cortex contains about twice as many neurons (300 million) as that of a dog's (160 million). I actually run a cat rescue myself called Golden Oldies Cat Rescue and Hospice (I have a Facebook page if you want to check it out) and Ebony's story is sadly one that is very common. However, where Ebony had a happy ending many stray cats don't as I have seen myself. The story is written beautifully in a way that is suitable for younger children, older children and adults alike to read. It is a unique and charming novella written through both the perspective of Ebony and her new family and is also based on a true story which also drew me to this book. We follow Ebony on her journey through the hardship of being a stray, finding her family, having her own family and then how the dynamics change between herself, her human family, her kittens and the family dog Benji and herself and her adult daughter Mimi. I loved the in depth way that Frances went into in regards to describing what Ebony was seeing, hearing and feeling and it really does make you think more about what your own cats are thinking and feeling during certain life events such as vet visits and exploring he outdoors. The fact that Frances has done her research into cats absolutely shines through the story so a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS as one of my pet hates is when a book is riddled with unnecessary mistakes that could have been avoided with just a little research. This is a great book that should be made available in schools, nurseries , play centres, libraries and everywhere really as it encourages the reader to consider animal welfare and how animals feel and see differently to us, encouraging young people to be kinder and older people to help strays in need. An eye opening, raw , unique and emotional novella perfect for animal lovers. It is a very enjoyable book and is a lovely addition to any child's library. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and my boys enjoyed listening.

My 10 year old son Malaki had this to say about this book:

I really enjoyed this book although it is sad at times. I loved learning lots of new facts about the cats which comes in handy with my mum's cat rescue. I love cats and reading all about them and Ebony is a lovely cat that I would love to read about again. Thank you Frances for telling us Ebony's story.

Congratulations Frances on a beautiful novella filled with emotion, gorgeous cats and exciting adventures! Here is to your next success 🥂

Overall a beautiful, emotional and unique novella about the adventures of Ebony the cat!!!
