Death At The Three Sisters by Jo Allen. Review

Book Description

Three feuding sisters. A faded spa. And a woman, dead in the water...

As they head towards retirement, Suzanne, Hazel and Tessa Walsh are locked in bitter disagreement

about the future of the lakeside beauty spa they jointly own. Should they keep The Three Sisters

going as their parents wished, or should they sell to a neighbouring hotelier who seems determined

to acquire the failing business, even at a preposterously high cost?

When their employee, Sophie Hayes, is found drowned close to the spa one cold January morning it

rapidly becomes clear that it’s no accident: Sophie has been murdered. But who could possibly want

to kill her — or was she mistaken for someone else? As DCI Jude Satterthwaite seeks the answers he

and his team dig ever deeper into the complicated and embittered relationships between the sisters

and their neighbours.

As the investigation proceeds Jude becomes convinced that Sophie’s murder may only be the

beginning. It’s not long before a shocking and tragic turn of events proves him correct and he and his

team find themselves in a race to prevent a further, final tragedy overtaking the Three Sisters.

Can he uncover what deadly secrets the sisters are prepared to die — or kill — for, or will he be too late?

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Death At The Three Sisters' by Jo Allen.

Read and reviewed for Jo Allen and Rachel's Random resources Tours.

Publication date 23rd March 2023.

This is the first book I have read by this author. It is also the tenth book in the DCI Jude Satterthwaite Mystery Series but can be read as a standalone.

This novel consists of 32 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Ullswater, Lake District, England, UK 🇬🇧. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture. I have actually visited Ullswater and the Lake District on several occasions so am looking forward to seeing if I recognise anywhere that Jo has based the book on.

This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonist is DCI Jude Satterthwaite The benefits of third person perspective with are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

Well, well, well Wow!!! What an absolute cracker of a book!!! This book sucked me straight in from beginning to the explosive ending. It was very well written with excellent descriptions which put me straight into the storyline. The synopsis and the cover suited the book perfectly.

This may be the first book I have read by Jo but I am definitely looking forward to getting stuck in to the rest of the books in this series as well as future books that she writes. I love a good crime book and this is definitely one I enjoyed getting stuck into!!! It is an absolutely fantastic page turner by the extremely talented Jo. Jo's fantastic evocative writing skills really bring the story to life. This book takes us to the absolutely stunning Lake District which I would highly recommend visiting if you have never been, specifically this book is set in Ullswater which is gorgeous and Jo's fantastic descriptions and evocative skills really sucks you into the storyline and drops you into the atmospheric setting. It tells us the story of three sisters, Suzanne, Hazel and Tessa who own a spa together. Sophie worked there but is found dead in the water and DCI Jude is set to investigate if it was an accident or murder. It is ram packed with mystery, suspense, family, relationships, drama, family, twists, jealousy, arguments, suspects and everything you could ask for in a page turning mystery. I absolutely loved the interviews which really sucked me in and made me determined to work out who the killer was. The fact that I didn't shows how great this book is as having read hundred of crime and thriller books it gets harder and harder to shock or surprise me anymore but Jo managed it perfectly so a huge well done Jo!! The fact there were so many different red herrings and so many possibilities that all would have worked perfectly I could not put this book down!!! I was so invested in the storyline that I was up until 2am!! I would LOVE to see this turned into a movie!!! I cannot wait to get stuck in to the previous and next books in what promises to be an absolutely addictive series!!

Although this is the tenth book in the series I had absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader. However, I would recommend reading it in order as I do with most book series and I'm looking forward to going back and reading the previous books.

It is always worrying when starting a new series as you have no idea who the characters are. It is very important for me to bond with not only the lead protagonists but also any characters that may make repeat appearances during the series too.

The characters were fantastic, solid and completely believable. There was a great eclectic mix of characters from good to bad which always helps to liven the storyline up. They all had such different and strong personalities and all suited the storyline perfectly. I enjoyed meeting DCI Jude for the first time and I found him to be a very likable character that I'm looking forward to getting to know in the previous books on this series. Jo's evocative writing skills really brought him to life making him jump out of the pages. I found all the characters to be realistic if not all likeable and I was intrigued reading about the relationship between Suzanne, Hazel and Tessa. They were very interesting characters to get to know and they also jumped out of the pages. There were such a mix of personalities along with suspects and its hard really to say too much about any of them without giving too much away!!! Regardless of whether you liked, loved or disliked any of the characters they all work perfectly together to bring this story to life. I cannot wait to meet Jude and more characters in the previous and next books in this series!!

Overall a compelling, addictive, gritty and intriguing page turning start to what promises to be an addictive series!!

Genres covered in this novel include British Detective Stories, Thriller, Murder Fiction, Traditional Detective Mysteries, Murder, Literature & Fiction, Murder Thriller, Mystery, and Crime Thriller amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Lisa Jewell, Rachel Abbott, K.L Slater, Karin Slaughter, Val McDermid, Carol Wyer, PJ Tracy, Robert Dugoni, T.M Logan, Patricia Gibney, MJ Lee and Kathy Reichs.
