She can be his lover

…but never his wife!

Forced into servitude, Wren is quietly miserable…until Jarl Knud arrives at her settlement,

seeking an alliance through marriage. Despite their initial sizzling attraction Wren despises

everything the Jarl represents—and he needs a high-status bride to save his people, not a

servant like her. As Wren uncovers the man beneath the fierce Viking chief she’s tempted to

claim one forbidden night of passion…but will it ever be enough?

Context: Jarl Knud has fallen for Wren, a servant girl, and they shared a night of passion. But

he must marry her ruler, the leader of a neighbouring clan, Earl Ingrid, to form an alliance…

Wren has just found out he has agreed to the marriage and is distraught…

‘So you were busy proposing to her this morning while I could still feel the things you’d done

to me—while I could still feel you inside me?’

His eyes lifted up to the dark night sky and he cursed, turning away for a moment before

coming back to her. ‘Wren… If me being her husband can buy your freedom and provide you

with a home here and keep you safe, then that is a sacrifice I’m willing to make.’

She shook her head fiercely. ‘I don’t want you to marry her. Don’t I get a say in this? It’s too

high a price to pay for my freedom. And you think I want to live here now, to watch this happen?

To see you two together day after day?’ She shook her head. ‘I can’t do that.’

‘No price is too high for your freedom,’ he said, reaching out and tucking a strand of her hair

behind her ear, and she shivered at feeling his fingers on her skin again. ‘I cannot—I will not—

compromise yours or anyone else’s safety for my own happiness.’

She didn’t understand what he was saying. Was he saying he didn’t like Earl Ingrid? Was he

admitting that he could be happy with Wren, but he was giving her up, simply to set her free?

She frowned. Then she definitely didn’t want her freedom.

‘And I cannot be here to watch you do this,’ she said, turning to go, to stalk back towards

the forest.

‘So you’re leaving me? Just like that?’ He gripped her arm again, spinning her round, pulling

her up against him. She could hear the anger in his voice. But there was hurt there, too.

She would gladly go back down there, walk into the longhouse and put that slave collar on

again if it meant he wouldn’t marry Earl Ingrid. If it meant she could be his.

Standing there, looking up at him in the moonlight, he looked just as he had that first night

at the tidal pool, when he’d been deep in thought, the weight of the world on his shoulders.

And she so desperately wanted to take away his pain.

But did she have the ability to do that? Could she make him see this was madness? That he

had made a mistake and he should change his mind? She didn’t think so.

Slowly, she raised herself up on her toes, leant up and kissed him, softly, on the lips one last

time. His lips lingered longer than they should on hers, his body swaying towards her. But then

she pulled back.

‘What are you doing?’ he choked, his voice strained.

‘Thanking you, for all that you’ve done for me, Knud. And saying goodbye. Don’t you see?

I can’t stay here, not now.’

She turned to go again, but he grabbed her hand. ‘Wren, you can’t kiss me like that and then

walk away from me…’

‘How can you kiss me like that and expect me to carry on?’ she said quietly. ‘When you’ve

promised yourself to another?’
