'Cerebral Palsy A Story' by Ilana Estelle

Book Description

'A perfect read for Covid19' @Heatherboisseau

Living with cerebral palsy is enormously difficult. But what if you never knew you had it?

This is the incredible story of Ilana Estelle.

Born the second of premature twins, an hour apart, from a young age Ilana knew she was different, but for all the wrong reasons. A child of the 60s, Ilana experienced first-hand the way that disability was, at the time, so often brushed under the carpet, not spoken about. Her constant physical and mental struggles made her feel isolated, alone, frustrated, and misunderstood. It took 46 years for her to find out why.

Part memoir, part motivational guide, Cerebral Palsy: My story is Ilana's open and honest journey from an angry, confused child, knowing something was wrong, not knowing what was wrong, what her disability was, or that there was a diagnosis - to the 'real' her - a courageous woman using her experiences and lessons to create inspiring messages about mental and physical health, resilience and change.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Cerebral Palsy A Story' by Ilana Estelle.

Read and reviewed for ZooLoos Book Tours, Red Door Press and Ilana Estelle.

Publication date 2nd January 2020.

I was originally drawn to this book by its topic. I must admit I don't know a huge amount about cerebral palsy so was intrigued to learn more about it and how it affects the people who live with it. I have also yet to read a book published by Red Door Press that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a foreword, introduction and 6 chapters. The chapters are medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This biography is very well written and easy to read. As u perviously stated I was attracted by this book because I wanted to learn more about cerebral palsy and how it affects someone with it and this book was an eye opener. I really liked how it was structured with each chapter concentrating on different aspects of Ilana's life. It begins with a foreword from Marty Linrose who is the former director of mentor and your programs at UCP Work Inc explaining how he came to know Ilana. Then the book moves on to an introduction to Ilana and then moves on to the 6 chapters which are Understanding Cerebral Palsy, Cerebral Palsy, Socialising and Society, Family life, Physical Health, Mental Health and finally Lifestyle, Beliefs and Spirituality. It is an inspirational read for anyone with or without cerebral palsy and I love Ilana's positive outlook on life. It is Ilana's personal journey which showed courage and strength. I enjoyed the quotes included throughout the chapters, and learning more about CP, the statistics, how it affected Ilana and so much more. There are tips that she gives on how the reader can improve our own mental and physical health. I am looking forward to researching Ilana's blog and increasing my research and knowledge on CP. I really enjoyed the fact that Ilana's has written this book in a way that the reader can dip in and out of the book and read in little chunks at a time if that is what they want to do. There is a lot that can be learned from reading Ilana's brave and inspirational memoir and I am glad that I came across it.

Overall an inspirational and emotional insight into living with cerebral palsy
