BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'A Killer Legacy' by Jim McGhee.

Read and reviewed for ZooLoos Book Tours and Jim McGhee .

Publication date 10th May 2022.

This is the first book I have read by this author. It is also the third book in the 'DI Barney Mains' series but can be read as a standalone.

I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. Although I haven't read any of Jim's previous books I did to an extract tour for 'The Major Minor Murders' which looked intriguing so when I seen this book I just had to read it!!

This novel consists of 26 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in France 🇫🇷.

This book is written in third person perspective and the protagonists are DI Barney Mains and Captain Jean-Luc Verten. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

This book is very well written with vivid descriptions that really set the scene for the reader. The cover and synopsis suit the storyline perfectly.

The storyline was intriguing, multi-layered and fast paced. I became completely invested in the storyline which took place in the beautiful city of France. The plot was filled with murder, secrets, tension, suspense, mystery and everything you could want in a crime thriller. Along with all the mystery and suspense you encounter on your French journey you will also come across celebrity lookalikes such as Marilyn Monroe but one who has a limp, scary wildfires and some dangerous men. There were several twists that I did not expect so a huge congratulations Jim. I have read so many crime thrillers that it is getting harder and harder to shock me but Jim managed to on a few occasions.

Although this could be read as a standalone I am most definitely going to go back and read the first book 'The Detective Wakes' and the second book 'The Major Minor Murders'. The main reason for this is because I'm looking forward to re-meeting Jim again as he had a very likeable personality and I liked his attitude. There were also a few references to what went on in previous crimes and also several characters who 'came from' previous books and I would be interested in their previous meetings and history.

The characters were all realistic, strong and well defined each with their own unique personalities. This is the first book in a new series for me (and I fully intend to go back and read the first two books in this fantastic series) so there were several new characters to meet. I was completely invested in DI Barney Mains and Jean-Luc Verten and I'm looking forward to re-meeting Barney in the previous books. I really loved Jim's take no bull attitude and I love the fact that his Scottish accent shines through ensuring I heard it from the pages!! I also enjoyed meeting the mix of secondary characters who surrounded this fantastic storyline. Shona and Fiona both stood out and I found them both very friendly and likeable.

Congratulations Jim on an absolutely fantastic book, I'm looking forward to reading the first two in this great series!

Overall a fast paced, engrossing and addictive thriller packed with suspense and action.

Genres covered in this book include British Detective, Scottish Detective, Thriller, French Travel, International Fiction, Crime Thriller, Scottish Crime, Conspiracy Thrillers and Crime Fiction amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of fast paced page turning thrillers.

274 pages.

This book is just £3.99 to purchase on kindle via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Rated 5 /5 (I loved it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

Author Bio

Jim McGhee's a former award-winning environmental journalist. Based in East Lothian, near Edinburgh, Scotland, he spends much of each year (in normal times) in the South of France, the main setting for the DI Barney Mains series, with tolerant wife Jean and rampant Irish Terrier, Jack. After a full-on career as a campaigning newspaper reporter, he and Jean launched their own recruitment company in central Edinburgh and for twelve fun-packed years worked closely together alongside their brilliant team - without spilling a single drop of blood. The Alpes-Maritimes and Var departments, on the other hand, have provided a host of dramatic locations just perfect as inspiration for the odd spot of fictional gore. Locals, blessed with scenery ranging from unspoiled mountain villages to the classic palms-and-marinas coast, claim that they can be swimming one moment and skiing a little over an hour later. Though when not writing or travelling en famille, Jim's more likely to be off on a hike in the hills with his ever-ready buddy, Jack.
